The Stack Street house is located in a character neighbourhood in inner city Auckland. To execute the crisp detailing and high specification of finish required by the client and architect, Eagle & Franich worked to a very high standard of craftsmanship throughout the house.
Built in a U shape around the outdoor courtyard, stack bond concrete block retaining walls were constructed to lower the site to a new ground level and create a private outdoor courtyard. The main house structure is a combination of concrete block and timber framing. The exterior cladding is solid plaster on concrete block alongside Alucobond panel fascias. Floor to ceiling sliding aluminium double glazed doors glide into pockets in the exterior walls. Four fireplaces, two indoors and two outdoors, are installed with different surrounds from concrete block to back painted black glass. Cantilevered frameless glass balustrades feature on upper level balconies.
The interior flooring is a combination of solid French oak flooring and custom cut bluestone. Extensive built in floor to ceiling cabinetry and Carrara marble bench tops feature in the kitchen. The bathrooms feature complete walls lined in back painted glass with glazed interior partitions. The Stack Street house received a NZIA Auckland Branch Local Award for Architecture in 2010.
